Breaking glass with sinus tone.

In technology class we always try to push the limits and lately we've been trying to break a wine glass by analyzing it's resonant frequency and replay it with a sinus generator at very loud volume.
First of all it doesn't work with normal wine glasses, cristal is best and is easy to resonate by making your finger wet and rubbing it over the edge of the glass in circles (you know the old trick) we managed to vibrate the glass to a certain point but the breaking didn't occur....Probably not enough juice from the speaker next to it!
Anyway you can try this experiment at home it's pretty cool!

Here's footage from a university who did succeed and filmed it in highspeed!

Online funny music application

Casper, one of my 13 year old bassguitar students , showed me this cool link called hobnox audiotool.

Hobnox Audiotool is a cool little music app for online composing, it feautures all of the typical plugin bussiness like roland 808 and 303 emulations as well as a bunch of standard boss like fx. Not mega exciting I know but when bored and surfing it's a creative antidote.

Open Circuit Crew(s) @ Kc België

15,16,17th of October the nice people over @ Kc België organised an open circuit event with workshops , video art, installations and performances.
We did 4 workshops in circuit bending and brother Rottchild took on a bunch of very talented students in design and new media to develop visuals for our live chiptune show at the end of the whole event.
Jim, Wout, Danny, Tom, Peter, Ruud and Olivier did a great job!

The workshops circuit bending were, as always, pure childhoodian fun and a menace to your ears and brain! Some students had great results combining LED's and LDR's on their toys, others just took everything apart and left it for dead.....

On saturday students from PHL music performed together on their bent stuff and we joined in for some impro schmimpro style.
The guys over at Rottchild's workshop did awesome stuff with their Arduino's and some oldskool CRT monitor's , starting from Little Scale's tutorial on hacking vga lines they made very cool and colorfull 8 bit visuals that react on midi or audio signals! Amazing stuff...
For Our Liveshow we used 3 Commodore 64's, A hacked Atari 2600, Two Gameboys, a Theremin and a bunch of hacked toys. Add crazy sound driven visuals and the fun never stops!

Graham Bell Experiment

I'm  teaching Music Technology classes at the PHL Music Department since september, and today we conducted an experiment in sound that came out quite well. It's great fun for all you nerdy types out there!
Stuff you'll need is : Vinegar , A tuning fork, an iron cup (or other conductive material), Alligator clips, a 9v Battery and headphones. Basically you'll be transmitting the 44O hz of the Tuning fork through electricity, this is how A.G. Bell invented the telephone way back.
Fill the cup with vinegar, then connect one end of the battery to your headphones stripped wire and the other end to the iron cup, also connect the tuning fork to the other stripped wire of the headphones, now whack the fork and dip it slightly with one end in to the vinegar, you'll be able to hear a transmitted signal of your tuning fork tone!
The studens are now off to create their own versions of the notorious APC device!

The Rott Childs

The Rott Childs are slowly crawling out of their glorious working hole! Their drummer is off to the States with Rise and Fall, but before he left they recorded a fair amount of songs in their stinky rehearsal room, they brought it to the Vermin Lab were we fiddled around with it and put the "down" back into Mixdown!
Listen 2 exclusive tracks on their myspace before they decide to take them offline!!!

R.stevie moore

The other night Stijn from the Pornbloopers introduced us to the crazy world of R. stevie moore! A great songwriter who back in the 70ties practically invented the whole DIY culture of recording and releasing your own albums, think of early Ween when they were 4tracking and doing lots of drugs!
